Charity goes to market
Award-winning charity, The Cascade Foundation, has taken a stall at Doncaster Market as part of a brand new learning and fundraising experience for its clients and volunteers.
CEO and founder of The Cascade Foundation, Jackie Hewitt-Main came up with the idea after she first discovered the market when she arrived in Doncaster from Benfleet in Essex.
Says Jackie: “I love markets, I always have, so to find such a thriving and busy market here in Doncaster was a big bonus for me – I’ve visited the market most weeks for the last three years, it’s such an asset for the town.
“Like most people, my colleagues and I have lots of clothes, books, toys and bric-a-brac we don’t actually wear or use anymore so we decided to set up a ‘Cascade Foundation Vintage Stall’ and sell them at Doncaster Market to raise funds for the charity.”
Continues Jackie: “This latest project also represents an excellent, hands-on learning opportunity for some of our clients to put some of their newly acquired reading, writing and interpersonal skills to the test by actually working in the local community and meeting new people.
“The team – Sheila Bailey, Karen West, Brenda Lonsdale and Michael Lowth and Cascade Foundation Ambassadors, Dale Easter, Molly Stretton and Ian Curry – organised everything from booking the pitch, gathering all the items we wanted to sell and transporting them to the market, to staffing the stall, marketing it and telling as many people as possible about the charity throughout the day.
“Everyone had a specific job on market day such as Dale who built up his confidence and handed out hundreds of leaflets to other stallholders and the general public and Sheila, who has a number of learning difficulties including dyslexia, and overcame them to deal directly with customers and sell lots of make-up bags!”
Concludes Jackie: “The ‘Cascade Foundation Vintage Stall’ generated lots of interest, raised funds of £115 for the charity and everyone had a fantastic day out – we can’t wait to go back!”
The ‘Cascade Foundation Vintage Stall’ will be at Doncaster Market again on 3rd November.
